Two police officers from Bungoma Railways Police Station tragically lost their lives on Tuesday afternoon in a head-on collision along the Webuye-Malaba Road in the Matulo area. The officers were traveling in a Land Cruiser when they attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with a fast-moving trailer coming from the Malaba direction.
According to eyewitnesses, both vehicles were speeding at the time of the accident. The officers died on the spot, while the trailer driver sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Bungoma County Referral Hospital for medical attention.
Bungoma South Sub-County Police Commander, Rodger Bosire, confirmed the incident, stating, "We have indeed lost two officers belonging to Bungoma Railways Police Station who were on duty moving from Webuye to Bungoma town." He urged all road users, especially drivers, to exercise caution on the busy road.
Local residents have long expressed concerns about the lack of speed bumps along this stretch of the road, citing numerous previous accidents. One local remarked, "Today's incident has shocked us. We have always asked relevant authorities to erect speed bumps on this busy road, but our pleas have always fallen on deaf ears."
The bodies of the deceased officers were transported to Webuye County Hospital for preservation as investigations into the accident continue.
